Star Wars: Giancarlo Esposito Hints at New Star Wars Trilogy Plans

Get ready, Star Wars fans! The galaxy far, far away might be gearing up for another epic trilogy, and we’ve got the scoop straight from one of the franchise’s most captivating villains.

You know him as the menacing Moff Gideon from “The Mandalorian,” but Giancarlo Esposito recently donned a different hat – that of a potential insider with some tantalizing information about the future of Star Wars on the big screen. At a recent Dragon Con panel, Esposito shared some exciting tidbits that have sent the rumor mill into hyperdrive.

“Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have a new vision,” Esposito revealed, hinting at the creative minds behind the upcoming “The Mandalorian and Grogu” movie. But here’s where things get really interesting: “My sense is that it’s all going to converge at one point or another and we’re going to have another set of… [a] trilogy, or more, of films.”

Now, before we jump to lightspeed with our speculation, let’s break down what we know for sure. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is set to blast into theaters in May 2026, bringing our favorite beskar-clad hero and his adorable green sidekick to the big screen for the first time. It’s a move that makes perfect sense, given how Din Djarin and Grogu have captured the hearts of fans worldwide and breathed new life into the Star Wars universe.

But what about this potential trilogy? Well, we already know there are three other Star Wars films in various stages of development:

  1. A Rey-centric sequel directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
  2. “Dawn of the Jedi,” helmed by James Mangold
  3. A “Mando-verse” wrap-up movie under the direction of Dave Filoni

Could Esposito be referring to these projects as the “new trilogy”? It’s possible, but there might be more to the story. Some fans are speculating that Filoni’s movie could be the launching pad for an entirely new trilogy, potentially tying together threads from “The Mandalorian,” “Ahsoka,” and other Disney+ series.

Of course, we have to take Esposito’s words with a grain of Crait salt. After all, Moff Gideon met a rather definitive end in Season 3 of “The Mandalorian.” Esposito himself seems reluctant to accept this fate, playfully suggesting at the panel, “There was a f***ing clone. Make it true!” While we’d love to see more of his deliciously villainous performance, it’s unclear if he’ll be part of future projects.

As exciting as the prospect of a new trilogy is, it’s worth remembering that quality should always come before quantity. The mixed reception to “The Rise of Skywalker” showed us that forcing a trilogy without a clear, cohesive vision can lead to disappointment. If “The Mandalorian and Grogu” and the ongoing TV shows lay the groundwork for a compelling multi-film arc, then by all means, let’s fire up those lightsabers!

What do you think, Star Wars fans? Are you ready for another big-screen trilogy? Or do you prefer the more focused storytelling of the Disney+ shows? Either way, it’s an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan, with new adventures on the horizon in both theaters and on the small screen.

One thing’s for sure – whether it’s one movie or a full trilogy, seeing Din and Grogu’s adventures unfold on the big screen is going to be one wild ride through the galaxy. May the Force be with them (and us) as we eagerly await “The Mandalorian and Grogu” in Spring 2026!
